How to achieve more goals? What are SMART goals? Where to get motivation to work towards your goal? Read on to get the answers!

Everyone has dreams, but they become more powerful when they are converted into goals. This article will give you some tips on how to set and achieve your goals and get motivated to work harder towards them.

Set S.M.A.R.T. goals

This is the most mentioned goal tip in all similar articles on this topic, but believe me – it’s indeed the most important one! SMART is an approach on how to set goals and it opens as follows:

Specific – well defined and not too broad, use action words

Measurable – determine metrics on how to measure the progress

Achievable – realistic and possible to achieve

Relevant – relevant to you at that time and makes sense for long term growth

Time-bound – deadline when the goal should be completed

By following these guides your goals will be much easier to track and achieve. Let’s see how you can improve on your goal definitions using this technique.

Non-smart goal example:

I want to be rich

Smart goal example:

I want to earn $100,000 by January 1, 2023

In the first example, it is not clear what it means for you to be rich, maybe it is $10,000 or maybe it is $1,000,000 – define it well. And when do you want to get rich? Do you hope to win a lottery or to earn it? So many unclear points, that it becomes vague.
In the second example, we added an action word (earn), we made it measurable and specific ($100,000) and defined the deadline by when it should be achieved.

Set at least 20 yearly goals

Now that you know how to define goals, it’s time to set your yearly goals. The more goals the better. Follow the S.M.A.R.T. technique and set at least 20 goals that you want to achieve this year.

You can write them down on paper, or save them in notes, however you find more convenient for you. Personally for me, paper is always the preferred option as I feel more attachment to the goal by writing them down by hand. And I usually have so many notes and applications on my phone and laptop, it is harder to organize and keep it always on top. While for paper approach, I buy a new notebook for writing down that year’s goals and tracking the progress (I am a bug notebook fan as you already guessed 🤓).

However, as I mentioned above, where you write them is completely up to you. It is important to keep there in a place that you will check regularly and remind yourself about the goals.

After all, is there a better feeling than marking a goal complete?

Appreciate baby steps

Always remember that to achieve something big you have to do many small steps. And these small steps are what bring you closer to your goal after goal. To earn $100,000 in one day is much harder than to earn $275 in a day or $35 in an hour. Split your goal into as many small steps as possible and reach to it step-by-step, patiently.

Develop healthy habits

What you do every day matters a lot as each your day is itself a baby step towards the goals. Healthy habits help you to achieve more as in a more structured way. When an action becomes a habit, your brain spends less energy on that action as it becomes an automatic action.

Let’s say you want to learn a new foreign language. If you learn 10 words every day during your lunch time, you will have learned 3650 words in a year, which is A LOT! And after a few days doing the same thing at the same time, it becomes a habit and you do it automatically.

Some useful habit examples are reading a book for 30 minutes, watching 10 minutes of online courses or checking your goals and setting new goals daily.

Rethink your daily routine

Habits become more powerful and easier to attain, when they become part of your routine. Both morning and evening routines are quite important. And they are actually easier to maintain as your work or unexpected events during the day will not postpone them.

Morning routine is a set of actions you do first thing you wake up, and evening routine is a set of actions you do before sleeping. I talk more about routines in this article.

Reward yourself

In order to stay motivated and appreciate all the steps, you should reward yourself for the effort you make. The reward can be something really small for just motivating yourself to do something to get that. It can be a movie night, the bag that you really liked or a new car for really big goals.

There is an application designed specifically for this purpose. The idea is that you set SMART goals there and add rewards you want. For completing each task or goal, you receive points which you can use to enjoy rewards.

As a conclusion, the most important part of achieving goals is setting them in a right way and defining the steps to reach it. As the quote says:

Don’t be afraid to think big, but have specific and realistic steps on how you will reach the goal. Appreciate every step as the journey itself is the most beautiful part of the goal.
